Bilingual Qualitative Research Interviewer (Tagalog / English) — Filipino Diaspora Study

Upwork

About this project

I am a solo founder at the early stage of a product concept serving Filipino communities living and working abroad. Before building anything, I need to conduct rigorous discovery research — 10 to 15 qualitative interviews with Filipino Jehovah's Witnesses currently living outside the Philippines.

The goal is to understand their daily lived experience: what decisions come up, what support exists or doesn't, and what they wish they had. This is not a sales exercise. It is classic Jobs-to-be-Done research, and the output will directly shape whether and what I build.

What you will do

Recruit 10–15 participants matching a profile I will provide, using informal channels (OFW Facebook groups, direct outreach, referrals). Recruitment through official congregation channels is not permitted.

Conduct each interview via Zoom or WhatsApp video, 45–60 minutes, following a structured guide I will provide in full.

Record each interview (with participant consent) and generate a transcript via Otter.ai or equivalent.

Complete a structured debrief document for each interview within 30 minutes of the call ending — before memory fades. Template provided.

Deliver translated highlights for each Tagalog-language interview: key responses rendered in English with tone, cultural nuance, and context preserved.

Deliver a final synthesis report (3–5 pages) covering patterns, standout quotes, signal strength per hypothesis, and your own interpretive read on what the data means.

What I am looking for in you

Fluent Tagalog speaker

— comfortable conducting a sensitive, emotionally nuanced 60-minute conversation in Tagalog on topics including faith, identity, finances, and loneliness

Product research or UX research experience

— you have conducted qualitative discovery or Jobs-to-be-Done interviews before and understand the difference between a leading question and a probe

Strong written English

— your translated highlights and synthesis report will inform real product and business decisions

Cultural familiarity

— proximity to the Filipino diaspora or OFW experience is a genuine advantage, not just a nice-to-have

Discretion

— you will be handling sensitive personal information shared by research participants; confidentiality is non-negotiable

Familiarity with the Jehovah's Witness community is not required, but intellectual curiosity about it is. A full context brief will be provided before your first interview.

To apply

Please answer the screening questions below in your proposal. Applications without responses to all screening questions will not be reviewed. I am looking for a researcher who is genuinely curious, comfortable with ambiguity, and understands that the job is to surface truth — not to confirm what anyone wants to hear.

Add all five as required questions. Short answer format:

Q1

Describe a qualitative research or discovery interview project you have conducted. What was the research objective, how many interviews did you complete, and what did the findings lead to?

Q2

How would you rate your spoken Tagalog fluency — conversational, professional, or native? Please describe a situation where you conducted a sensitive or emotionally complex conversation in Tagalog.

Q3

This research involves interviewing Filipino Jehovah's Witnesses living abroad about their daily life, faith, and personal struggles. What about your background makes you well-suited to conduct these conversations with sensitivity and cultural understanding?

Q4

In qualitative research, what is the difference between a leading question and a follow-up probe? Give an example of each in the context of a user interview.

Q5

What is your proposed fixed-price rate for this full engagement — including recruitment, 10–15 interviews, per-interview debriefs, translated highlights, and a final synthesis report? Please also confirm your availability to begin within two weeks.
