Role and Responsibilities
The Community Organizer I (PEP) provides AOD-related alcohol, and other drugs including marijuana, prescription drugs, and associated drug education and information to youth and adult communities of the South Bay SPA 8 region. Conduct presentations, training, and outreach engagement for the purpose of impacting change around youth access and use in the home and community. Prevention Education to Action encompasses life skills and cultural relevance to recognize diversity within environmental and social change campaigns. Conduct periodic weekend (Saturday) outreach events. The Community Organizer I receives guidance from CO II and is under the direct supervision of the Prevention CIP Coordinator.
TARGET AREA ORGANIZING (70%):
- Conducts AOD and life skills series education presentations, workshops and trainings primarily in the South Bay, SPA 8 region;
- Supports the educational development of youth and adult coalition members in collaboration with local and regional prevention coalitions;
- Conducts comprehensive community assessments of the assigned target areas in SPA 8, South Bay region;
- Conducts creative educational information using media advocacy (Social Media post and reels,, virtual training (live, and recorded Youtube videos), podcasts,
- Supports outreach and mobilization of policy campaigns to provide inform relevant alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs (AOD) prevention information in support of AOD policy actions;
- decision-makers and City staff;
- Implements an SPF strategic action plan involving youth and adult volunteer base;
- Provide recommendations to contract plans according to the emerging community needs, issues, and problems;
- This is a field-based position and requires the ability to utilize a personal vehicle to transport supplies, media, and equipment to and from community sites.
COUNTY-WIDE ORGANIZING (15%):
- Provide technical assistance to other organizing bodies as assigned.
- Participate in County based Roundtable and other coalition-based meetings.
- Conduct advocacy around local, state, and federal policy decisions.
ADMINISTRATIVE (10%):
- Comply with City, County, State, and Federal contractual agreements.
- Submit billing reports and other reporting requirements as assigned.
- Maintain accurate files on organizing activities and evaluations.
UNIT AND AGENCY (5%):
- Attend Unit and Agency sponsored meetings and functions.
- Represent AADAP at local, state, and federal forums, conferences, and other activities.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

- Regular work schedule may need to be adjusted for specific situations as dictated by program needs.
Preferred Skills
- Bilingual or bicultural capabilities with Los Angeles County threshold languages: Arabic, Armenian, Cantonese, Farsi, Urdu, Khmer (Cambodian), Korean, Mandarin, Russian, Spanish, Tagalog, Vietnamese, and other Asian languages.
General Requirements and Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA’s):
- Permanent resident or U.S. Citizen; proof of work eligibility upon hiring.
- Must have three (3) years of recovery or drug free lifestyle as of the date of the application.
- Must provide proof of full vaccination and 1st Booster against Covid-19 upon hiring.
- Ability to get along well with others, be punctual, pleasant, and tactful with professional appearance and conduct.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, coworkers, clients and their families, community organizations, and the general public.
- Ability to be culturally competent of age groups, gender identity, sexual orientation, spiritual beliefs, socioeconomic status, and diverse cultures.
- Ability to get along well with others, be punctual, pleasant, and tactful with professional appearance and conduct.
Physical Requirements:
Moderate Duty
This class requires that the incumbent stand or walk most of the time with bending, stooping, squatting, twisting reaching, working or irregular surfaces, occasional lifting of objects over 25 pounds, and frequent lifting of 10-25 pounds. Ascending and descending ladders and staircase will be more frequent. An example is this position frequently will be moving and organizing agency supplies.
