PROGRAM OVERVIEW:

United Way of King County’s vision is to build a community where people have homes, students graduate, and families are financially stable. As part of our work to end poverty, we are committed to ensuring that children, particularly children of color, have access to healthy food in the places where they live, learn, and play.

United Territories of Pacific Islanders Alliance Washington (UTOPIA Washington) is a queer and trans people of color-led, grassroots organization born out of the struggles, challenges, strength, and resilience of the Queer and Trans Pacific Islander (QTPI – “Q-T-pie”) community in South King County. We are actively replacing systems of oppression with ecosystems of care and safety for all our communities through Black and Brown organizing, prioritizing land and bodily autonomy, and reclaiming our cultural narratives.

The Food Security AmeriCorps team is a dynamic cohort of direct service AmeriCorps members working in partnership with United Way staff, AmeriCorps HungerCorps members, school districts, and community-based organizations to connect families with the food they need. As a member, you will serve with partner organizations – food banks, collectives, and community anti-hunger organizations – all who prioritize increasing food justice and food security in our community.

MEMBER ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The HungerCorps Member, under the guidance of the Community Services Director, will assist the further development of UTOPIA Washington’s Food Access Network program. This position will help the community lead, improve their advocacy, affect policy change, and address the lack of accessibility to healthy food options. The HungerCorps Member will help educate, organize and advocate policy work surrounding food equity and justice issues affecting our communities.

Support the implementation and management of, but not limited to, UTOPIA Washington’s
Food Access Network Program.
Work to fully develop, implement and sustain UTOPIA Washington’s food and nutrition strategic policy, system, and the environmental change initiatives designed to increase geographical and economic access to foods.
Advance community partnerships and creating sustainable systems for collaborative engagements.
Develop and steward relationships with Indigenous communities, elders, and youth to support consultation around disposition of cultural resources, access, and development of programs.
Maintain data management infrastructure for UTOPIA Washington and support community members use of data.
Actively participate in program strategy, planning, tracking, and reporting, and staff meetings.
Actively participate and organize Statewide and County events.
Other duties as assigned by Community Services Director or Food Access Network Program Manager.

WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR:

Must have a valid driver’s license needed to travel to and from various locations, but limited to, UTOPIA Washington’s Fa’atoaga (Farms) in Kent and Puyallup.
Ability to speak, read, and write in English; strong candidates may have additional language skills.
An ability to communicate with people or groups with varying perspectives or positions.
Strong social justice analysis, knowledge of systemic systems of oppression, and lived experience of the power of community organizing to transform lives and communities.
Excellent organizational and planning skills.
Self-Starter with a strong desire to learn.
A minimum of 2 years of direct Farming or related experience.
Two years of community organizing and/or cultural work, especially within the LGBTQI+ and/or Pacific Islander communities. Equivalent experience with facilitation or community engagement will be considered

As a member of this cohort, you will be supported with a robust orientation, ongoing professional development opportunities, trainings, check-ins, and the tools and resources you need to succeed. Members will walk away from their year of service with an understanding of on-the-ground food security work as well as a deep knowledge of food justice principles, anti-hunger strategies, and increasing food access across the community.

This is a full-time position and members will serve approximately 40 hours per week for the duration of their service term. Members will infrequently move or lift boxes weighing up to 30 pounds. This position will involve service in outdoor weather conditions, and may involve standing, walking, or moving around the service location for up to four hours at a time.

Bi-weekly stipend of $1385.18 (pre-tax)

ELIGIBILITY:

Must be over 18 years old on the first day of service
Must be a U.S. citizen, national, or legal permanent resident of the United States. Unfortunately F1 visas are not sufficient.
Must be available 40 hours per week through August 2025. Exact hours may vary by site placement, but will primarily be Monday – Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Must undergo a Washington State Patrol background check, FBI background check and National Sex Offender Registry Check, plus state of residence background check if not currently living in Washington
