Help oversee the backpack buddy program by keeping in contact with schools and ensuring that they have the resources necessary to feed their students each week.

PROGRAM OVERVIEW:

United Way of King County’s vision is to build a community where people have homes, students graduate, and families are financially stable. As part of our work to end poverty, we are committed to ensuring that children, particularly children of color, have access to healthy food in the places where they live, learn, and play.

Covington Storehouse has been operating since 1999. We serve food to clients in the 98042 via a shopping model. We offer a Thursday home delivery program through United Way of King County and a weekend backpack buddy program for 300+ local students K-12. We serve with dignity and compassion and believe in partnerships built on trust and relationships. Our mission is to serve our neighbors, who are struggling with, or are vulnerable to food insecurity. Our vision is to improve the quality of life for our neighbors beyond food security.

The Food Security AmeriCorps team is a dynamic cohort of direct service AmeriCorps members working in partnership with United Way staff, AmeriCorps HungerCorps members, school districts, and community-based organizations to connect families with the food they need. As a member, you will serve with partner organizations – food banks, collectives, and community anti-hunger organizations – all who prioritize increasing food justice and food security in our community.

MEMBER ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Communicating with Food Bank clients
Communicating with school liaisons
Conducting Outreach
Data Collection
Monthly Reports
Weekly Team Meeting with a Storehouse Supervisor/Lead.
Measurables/Target Goals
Ensure enough supplies is available at each participating school
Work with partner agencies such as KSD and Covington Rotary Club for program success.
Assist with home delivery
Assist with set up/clean up/food bank day to day processes and needs.
Work both as a team and independently

WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR:

We believe that the communities we serve must be centered in the work we do. People of color and people with experience accessing food resources are highly encouraged to apply
Experience and passion for working with youth and families, particularly youth from low-income communities
Experience working with diverse populations and an ability to apply a racial equity lens towards anti-hunger work
Ability to build and sustain relationships and effectively communicate information to a broad audience
Strong organizational skills, and the ability to collect and manage confidential client information
Flexibility to balance the variety of service activities and resourcefulness to quickly solve problems or find solutions for community members
Second language skill (especially Spanish, Somali, Amharic, Vietnamese, Tagalog, Russian, or Ukrainian) is highly desirable so that we can offer services to families in their preferred or native languages

As a member of this cohort, you will be supported with a robust orientation, ongoing professional development opportunities, trainings, check-ins, and the tools and resources you need to succeed. Members will walk away from their year of service with an understanding of on-the-ground food security work as well as a deep knowledge of food justice principles, anti-hunger strategies, and increasing food access across the community.

This is a full-time position and members will serve approximately 40 hours per week for the duration of their service term. Members will infrequently move or lift boxes weighing up to 30 pounds. This position will involve service in outdoor weather conditions, and may involve standing, walking, or moving around the service location for up to four hours at a time.

Bi-weekly stipend of $1385.18 (pre-tax)

ELIGIBILITY:

Must be over 18 years old on the first day of service
Must be a U.S. citizen, national, or legal permanent resident of the United States. Unfortunately F1 visas are not sufficient.
Must be available 40 hours per week through August 2025. Exact hours may vary by site placement, but will primarily be Monday – Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Must undergo a Washington State Patrol background check, FBI background check and National Sex Offender Registry Check, plus state of residence background check if not currently living in Washington
